How Aging Affects Your Macula and Central Vision

Older woman experiencing blurry vision symptoms of AMD

Age-related macular degeneration, also called AMD, is one of the leading causes of central vision loss in adults over 50. As the macula changes with age, everyday activities can become more difficult.

At Cornerstone Eye Associates in Dallas, Texas, care for age-related vision changes is led by Dr. Claire Y. Chu, M.D., a board-certified ophthalmologist with more than 15 years of experience. To understand how AMD can affect your everyday vision, let us first look at the role the macula plays in how you see the world around you and what causes it to degenerate.

What Causes AMD?

The macula is a small area located in the center of the retina at the back of the eye. It controls your central vision and helps you see fine details clearly. AMD develops when the macula gradually begins to break down with age.

There are two main types of AMD:

  • Dry AMD: Occurs when the macula thins over time and small yellow protein deposits called drusen build up beneath the retina.
  • Wet AMD: Develops when abnormal blood vessels grow beneath the retina and leak fluid or blood into the macula. Wet AMD is less common but can cause faster vision loss if left untreated.

Symptoms of Macular Degeneration

Because symptoms can progress slowly, many people do not notice early changes right away. They often develop gradually and may become more noticeable over time.

Common signs include:

  • Blurry central vision
  • Straight lines appearing wavy
  • Difficulty reading small print
  • Trouble recognizing faces
  • Dark spots in central vision
  • Colors appearing faded
  • Reduced vision in dim lighting

How to Help Slow the Progression of AMD

While AMD cannot always be prevented, certain steps may help protect your vision and slow progression:

  • Schedule yearly comprehensive eye exams
  • Eat a healthy diet rich in leafy greens and antioxidants
  • Avoid smoking and manage blood pressure
  • Protect your eyes from UV exposure
  • Follow recommended treatment and monitoring plans for AMD
